About Shawn

Shawn Taylor Family

Clear Leadership for A Clear Future

Shawn Taylor is a dedicated family man, respected community leader, and passionate advocate for the values that define Charleston’s unique character. Originally from the close-knit town of Utahn, Utah, Shawn deeply understands the importance of fostering unity, opportunity, and shared prosperity in small communities. For over nine years, he and his wife, Addie, have proudly called Charleston home, where they are raising their four children and contributing to the town’s vibrant, welcoming spirit.

With a distinguished career in business, Shawn has a proven record of addressing challenges with innovative, inclusive solutions that uplift communities. As Charleston’s GOP precinct vice chair and a valued member of the NFIB State Legislative Council, he collaborates with local and national leaders to champion policies that support small businesses and strengthen rural economies. His experience as a former state delegate and precinct chair, combined with his advocacy in Washington, D.C., reflects his commitment to advancing thoughtful, community-driven initiatives. Shawn’s work has also supported key industries, including agriculture, tourism, and community events, which enrich Charleston’s way of life.

Shawn is running for mayor to ensure Charleston’s future reflects the priorities of its residents. With critical issues like infrastructure, sustainable growth, and resource management on the horizon, Shawn is committed to transparent, inclusive leadership that honors Charleston’s heritage while planning responsibly for future generations. His vision is to preserve the town’s cherished sense of community, ensuring Charleston remains a place where families thrive and every voice is heard.

Charleston Utah

Core Issues I'm focused on

  • Sewer Infrastructure & Growth Management
Sewer development requires careful, deliberate planning, not hasty implementation. Unchecked sewer expansion can lead to increased density and population growth, which could reshape our community's character. I'm committed to strategic solutions, like exploring hybrid systems and securing state grants, to ensure Charleston controls its growth trajectory. This approach allows us to accommodate progress thoughtfully while preserving our cherished rural identity.

  • Town Finances & Revenue Diversification
Our sales tax revenue heavily depends on the Staker Parsons plant, which accounts for the majority of our income and creates vulnerability for long-term financial stability. To mitigate this, we need to diversify by promoting cottage industries and supporting businesses that align with Charleston's core identity, all while avoiding any increases in personal taxes for residents. Transparency remains essential; as mayor, I commit to scrutinizing the budget line by line to maximize efficiency and ensure accountable spending.

  • Communication & Transparency
A well-informed community is a stronger one. Residents deserve clear, accessible updates on town decisions and events without jumping through hoops. In addition to regular email newsletters, I'd like to enhance communication and transparency by making meetings more accessible, both in-person and virtually, not only during the sessions but afterward as well. This includes establishing an active social media presence and a modernized website to keep everyone connected. Tools like live streamed or recorded meetings, along with work sessions before council meetings, will further promote transparency, reduce frustration, and ensure politics don't overshadow policy.

My Key Improvements

  • Addressing Concerns with Soldier Hollow Charter School
Traffic concerns from Soldier Hollow Charter School have been a major source of frustration for many residents, and I recognize that not everyone is happy about its presence in Charleston. These challenges often stem from inadequate communication with school leadership. My priority is to open direct lines of dialogue to collaboratively identify and implement solutions that address community complaints while working toward agreements that benefit the town. To bridge gaps, we can explore including school families in select town events where it makes sense, such as the farmers market booth at the July 19th celebration, as a way to promote mutual understanding without overlooking local concerns.

  • Community Events & Resident Engagement
Our small size is a strength that brings us together through events. Popular gatherings like the 24th of July celebration, town Christmas party, and Trunk or Treat draw strong participation, and we should expand on this momentum. New ideas, such as community concerts in the park or regular farmers markets, alongside enhancements to existing events, can further unite residents.

  • Modernized Website & Communication Channels
Accessing meeting agendas, recordings, and town updates is currently clunky, with communications sent monthly through flyers and emails. I want to prioritize recording all public meetings and improving access to those recordings for residents who can't attend in person. I envision a user-friendly, mobile-optimized website with clear access to minutes, event calendars, permits, and contacts. Simple improvements and active social media will make information inclusive and effortless for all residents to access.
